For those of you that have never heard of CPSIA, it is a new law that is threatening to put millions of crafters out of business. While this law I am sure was passed with the best intentions, it requires lead testing on all items that will be used for children under 12 years old, it was created quickly and without much foresite to the ambiguous nature of the law. This law applies to ALL items that are intended for children under 12 and includes toys, clothing, bedding, the list goes on and on. Many in the hand crafting industry are calling Feb. 10th "National Bankruptcy Day" because anything that is sold after this day that has not been tested for lead will be illegal to sell. Lead testing is very expensive (we are talking hundreds and thousands of dollars per unit) and just not feasible for small businesses to do. While we as crafters, designers, and boutique owners want to be compliant and provide the safest items for our children, unfortunately many will not be able to continue with their business.
